A Foley catheter is a medical device consisting of a flexible tube that the doctor inserts into the bladder through the urethra to drain urine. One end of the catheter is equipped with a balloon that is inflated when the catheter is placed inside the bladder, preventing it from slipping out on its own. At the opposite end, the catheter has three openings, one for the elimination of urine, another for the inflation of the balloon, and the third for providing an irrigating solution or drug delivery. The opening for urine output is connected to a collection bag; this bag is usually attached to a leg so that the patient can lead an almost normal life. The Foley catheter is kept in place for two to three months until the problem is resolved.
