The oropharyngeal cannula (also called a Guedel airway) is a medical device made of rigid plastic and used to maintain patency of the upper airway, especially in the operating room or during resuscitation maneuvers. It has an anatomical shape, and once inserted into the oral cavity, it prevents the tongue from falling and thus obstructing the upper airway, ensuring an adequate flow of air. It consists of a curved, rigid plastic tube that is attachable to an oxygen mask or BMV resuscitator in order to maintain a clear airway during oxygen administration. The cannula should be inserted only in unconscious patients. When used in conscious patients, the patient reacts with retching and coughing, causing the expulsion of the cannula.
